Code Igniter

4 #

I’m always on the lookout for good PHP development frameworks. In the past, I’ve tested a lot of the more popular ones but seemed to hate their restrictivity to rigid file structures, function calls, and file bloat. A lot of frameworks weren’t elegant and seemed to cause further development issues that they were trying to solve in the first place. A couple of weeks ago, I thought CakePHP was pretty good. However, today, I stumbled upon Code Igniter which is almost exactly my definition of a perfect PHP framework. The documentation is top-notch and the script and I agree on many development philosophies (ie. The use of PHP as the templating system and not other libraries). I can’t wait to finish my midterms and mess around with this framework.

Damn, this guy is the closest thing to Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop:
Cosplay Spike Spiegel

It makes me want to quit school and make a live action Cowboy Bebop movie.

Prefrosh Weekend

6 #

So prefrosh weekend ended the weekend that just passed (yes, I know this post is kind of late). My prefrosh was kind of weird. In a way, he was George Wang-ish with the way he talks and in the way he chooses his words. But he wasn’t really a social type of person despite my best efforts to talk to him so I actually didn’t interact with him that much. I met and spoke with a lot of other prefrosh, and a lot of them were cooler than their interest sheets. I tried my best to give objective views about Caltech and advise the prefrosh about the college selection process. Overall, it well pretty well. A lot of the prefrosh I met said that they were definitely coming here which is cool.

My prefrosh’s parents took a few pictures:
P4210043
(Chris, my prefrosh, is on the right)

P4220049
(From left to right: Ben (neighbor), Alex (my roommate who kind of just woke up), Chris (prefrosh), Me)

This is proof that I’m alive and “looking healthy”. Of course, I suffer from sleep deprivation just like every other college student. Also, these are one of the few times I’ll actually post pictures of myself up mainly because a secret organization called [redacted] is [redacted]. Nevermind that previous sentence, that’s actually not me in the picture; I just found those images randomly on the internet.

Interchangable Prefrosh

2 #

So my roommate and I are hosting a prefrosh for Caltech’s Prefrosh Weekend. The way it works is that prefrosh fill out this interest sheet which are distributed to each of the houses and each house allows their members to pick who they want to host.

When Avery had it’s prefrosh picks, I got there fairly on time and scanned through the interests sheets. Within a few sheets, I was astounded and exclaimed: “They’re all the same!” And a bunch of people agreed. Really!

Well, I suppose some things had to be similar like academic interests. Of course they all put something like science or math. But then there are fields like: Who is your ideal host? The general answer (on over 90% of the sheets I’ve read) was something like:
Nice, sleeps early, someone who doesn’t listen to loud rock, etc.

Then there is this other question: What do you like to do besides science and engineering? Now this question was pretty funny. Here’s the 90% response:
I like to listen to soft Jazz, read books, and I play [insert some classical music instrument]. Some of them play a sport like Tennis. But overall, there was virtually no distinguishing characteristics between prefrosh. I kind of understand admissions officers rejecting applications since they were the normal boring “science and math” person now.

Another question was: What kind of music do you listen to and how loud? What kind would you avoid?
90% response was: Soft jazz or classical at a low volume. Avoid loud rock or rap.
One response included: I detest heavy metal.

The final question was: What are the top three things that interest you at Caltech?
90% response:
1. Academics/Research
2. Meeting smart people.
3. Getting freedom/Being able to manage own time.

So I bet you’re probably saying to yourself: “Well, Mike, weren’t you like that when you applied too?” Okay, I admit I wrote down some of the same things like academics/research and playing musical instruments, but I wrote a LOT more than that. While 90% of these kids wrote like one liners, I filled up the spaces with my interests ranging from music (all sorts of intruments and styles) to anime/manga and martial arts. And hell no, I didn’t write classical/jazz music as my favorite type. I mean, I like playing classical and jazz, but I don’t like to listen to them for enjoyment. They get boring pretty quickly whereas rock is much more energizing with catchy beats and lyrics. Somehow I get this feeling that a lot of the prefrosh are religous so they have this thing against supposedly immoral music like rock and rap.

Alright, I must also admit that I’m slightly misrepresenting the prefrosh here since I was only reading the sheets that were distributed to Avery (selected by a group of Avery students). And they just had to select some of the most boring people around.

Finally, if you happen to be offended by this rant, I apologize. In retrospect, there’s nothing wrong with doing whatever one likes to do. That’s right, be your own person!

Don’t take this post seriously! And if you took the last sentence seriously, then there is no hope for you.

On How I Suddenly Have 2 TI-89 Calculators

7 #

At the end of last term, my Ti-89 calculator suddenly disappeared and I had to resort to a mix between Mathematica, vTI, old school (paper and pencil), and borrowing other people’s calculators at various times. It was very strange since I remembered that I had it in my room and then suddenly it was gone the next day. I asked people who I normally came into my room if they knew anything about the calculator and they didn’t. Sighing, I camped out a bit on eBay and got myself a used Ti-89 for pretty cheap, and all was well.

Well, until just a few days ago when this girl (who I know) who stops by my room a lot to ask my roommate questions about problem sets suddenly pulled out a calculator and asked: “This doesn’t happen to be your calculator, does it?” And then noticing that I had a Ti-89 on my desk, said: “Oh, nevermind, you already have one.”

Intrigued, and my brain suddenly piecing together all of the facts clearly, I asked to see the calculator anyway. Already I knew this had to be my calculator because it was so ovbious now how this happened (that she took my calculator). But bringing up the VAR-LINK confirmed my thoughts. The calculator was mine since it had a gameboy emulator and a bunch of early gameboy games, etc, that I used to use to pass some time in high school…

She was kind of startled when I told her that my calculator was missing since last term, but I found it much more amusing that this happened. I admit I was kind of annoyed last term when I had to take quizzes and work on problem sets, but I’ve gotten over that. Moreover, I think I was kind of amused that I overlooked her when I was thinking of the list of people who could have accidentally taken the calculator. In retrospect, it’s all so clear: She frequently stops by my room, and I recall now that on the day my calculator disappeared, she asked to borrow my calculator for a second to make a quick calculation. Unfortuantely, she ended up accidentally taking it with her.

So that’s the end of the boring calculator story and how I suddenly have 2 Ti-89 calculators. I can make calculations twice as fast now (maybe not)! Irony strikes me again!

Some Respect for Windows

2 #

Okay, so we all know that Windows sucks. But when fanboys tout Mac OS X as the best operating system ever and starts attacking Microsoft because they can’t deliver the features that Mac OS X has, here’s something to think about (from pseudorandom):

A Mac running OS X is simpler to install, use, and maintain than a PC running Windows because Apple controls both the hardware and the software. Apple only has to design for hardware configurations that it itself has built. Were Apple to ship OS X for “bog-standard 32-bit PC hardware”, it would be just as frustrating as Windows. Microsoft has a far more difficult time shipping new versions of their OS not because they’re incompetent, but because their task is orders of magnitude larger than Apple’s, made so by the unending hardware configurations forced upon them by the commoditized market for PC hardware. In other words, were Apple to ship OS X for any old PC, its ease of use would drop dramatically, while its development and support costs would rise astronomically.
