Not Country Because I Said So

1 #

Well, in Avery, we usually have our doors open to promote a sense of openness and whatever. So I just heard this great quote from down the hall:
*music playing*
Girl: Hey, what kind of music is that?
*music stops*
Guy: Rock.
Girl: That’s rock?! That doesn’t sound like rock. …It sounds like country music!
Guy: No, that’s not country music.
Girl: Why?
Guy: I don’t like country music, so since I like this song, it’s not country.

(I’m tempted to add: QED or Proved at the end of his statement.)

The Real Life GTO

3 #

I was going to code for Xcomic, but I spent the last hour reading the editorials written by an American guy who went to Japan to teach middle school, I think. He keeps his editorials (kind of like blog posts) up to date. His latest post was today actually! But I have to say, reading about his life in Japan shattered a lot of my conceptulizations that the Japanese are nice and reserved anime-like people that anime and manga portray them as (yeah, yeah, I know it’s foolish to generalize fictional stories to the whole Japanese population, but I can’t help it). This guy’s editorials are very well written and hilarious. He doesn’t really have a “blog”, but his editorials are what “blog” posts should be like! It reads like a book, after I read one account, I would advance to the next one and the next. He’s pretty much a mirror of the manga “Great Teacher Onizuka”. The scary thing is, if you read GTO, you can a pretty good idea of what this guy is saying that the Japanese educational system and students are like!

A Lot of Stuff and Busy

So a lot of things have happened since I started this term. It’s too much to write actually, but I’m doing myself a disservice by not writing them down as soon as possible since the list keeps growing. Ah, I’ve also been pretty busy these days too…

Finished Great Teacher Onizuka

Ah, I started over the summer reading Great Teacher Onizuka which is a manga series about a guy who aspires to be the greatest teacher ever. I finished it today, and it was a pretty amazing series. Even though Onizuka was just a fictional character, he was very inspiring. He showed what it was like to be a great person and to be your own person.

Diffculty Restored

Wow! I’m two days into Caltech’s second term, and things are getting pretty difficult! I had 7 continuous hours of class today, and I have 3 more hours tonight giving a total of 10 hours! Thursdays (today) are the worst! Normally I have about 3-4 hours of class. In other news, physics is covering special relativity, chemistry covering spectroscopy, and math covering vector spaces…

Flight Cancelled

2 #

Arg! *pretends to be really angry* My flight to Los Angeles today was cancelled today because of the weather (after waiting and arguing for about 3 hours at the airport). I have to leave early tomorrow to get to Caltech. Even then, I’ll be missing my first day of classes and all of those kids at Avery will be throwing huge parties and having tons of fun (Well, I’m kidding about the last part)! The moral of the story is: 1. Book your flights at least 2 weeks early. 2. Fly Southwest because they are awesome and cheap. Delta Airlines charges up the roof, requires connecting flights, and screws you over when it starts raining.
