Busy, as usual

Life has been extremely busy as usual these days. This weekend that just passed, I went to Los Angeles for the Gates Millenium Scholars conference. I lived in a big hotel, met a few people, ate some food, listened to some people talk.

Overall, it was good, but I just wanted to get back so I could finish my math problem set ^^;;. I don’t really have a life here which I sometimes regret, but then again, I came to Caltech for the science and math. *nods* That’s probably my only good reason…

Wait a sec… science…math…is there some other component of “a life” that I’m overlooking?

Uh, well, okay, you have a point.

Oh come on. I’m at MIT and I have a social life… I work on psets with people! =P

No, seriously. Get out and explore Cali on the weekend or something, Mike. Take a break for goodness sake. Your brain will explode if you don’t give it a rest from homework once in a while.

Doing problem sets with people is too difficult. I work better doing the problem set on my own and then popping into groups to ask people questions. I don’t have good concentration skills so I need to be at total peace to be able to work on problem sets.

I can’t explore California since I don’t have a car, and I didn’t figure out the almost non-existant public transportation system here yet. I take breaks by surfing the web and watching anime, reading manga, and watching movies. That’s how I’m still somewhat sane.

I would *like* to be able to do some “social stuff”, but it’s social life, sleep, grades: pick two.

I don’t see what’s difficult about doing psets with people. You just sit there and work and so do they, occasionally discussing something you’re having trouble with… no need to seclude yourself from everyone *except* when you have a question, because what if someone else has a question you could help them with?? I did so much helping with chem this past week it was crazy– everyone else seemed to be making acids and bases an awfully lot harder than they really are.

Seriously, Cali doesn’t have public transportation? I thought they were all… eco-conscious and driving Priuses and crap out there. Geez. Boston doesn’t even give a crap about the environment and we’ve had mass transportation here since 1631. No joke! Just another reason why this ‘Stvte is so superior to yours… California wasn’t even populated in 1631 and Mass was already setting up ferry lines from the peninsula to the mainland. Engineering’s been around for an awful lot longer on this side of the continent, and we actually put it to good use out here. Sorry, but That Other Institute of Technology just doesn’t compare… =P

    Haha, now I’m being annoying.

Well, it’s difficult since I do my homework on a Tablet PC and it’s not really fun putting a laptop that gets increasingly hot on your lap while sitting on the floor in awkward positions that really mess up one’s back and such. Well, there’s no need to worry about me helping other people. Heh heh, at Caltech, my peers don’t need my help. I need their help though.

California has a really bad public transportation system. You can only get to certain places but no where inbetween (and the inbetween is a long walk or something). People drive a lot of eco-friendly cars around here which is really nice, and I approve of that. But that doesn’t really have anything to do with public transportation.

Well, I agree. That Other Institute of Technology just doesn’t compare. You’re talking about MIT, right?

How on earth do you do math homework on a computer?? Don’t you have to draw graphs and stuff?

“while sitting on the floor in awkward positions” — Caltech doesn’t have chairs? Or couches? Or… anything to sit on? Geez, you guys are behind the times.

Public transportation is eco-friendly. It reduces pollution and uses fewer natural resources to get the same number of people from point A to point B.

Nobody asks you for help on anything at Caltech? That’s… kinda sad. Or maybe it’s because you just are never in the common room with them for them to ask you questions…? Sometimes people just aren’t totally sure of themselves and want to see if they got the same answer as you, or really don’t understand how to do a problem so you can explain it to them. I think it’s probably you being inaccessible, rather than them being uber-intelligent, that explains why nobody asks you questions.
