Mothman Prophecies at CMU!

0 #

We were watching the Mothman prophecies last week in Mr. Connelly’s AP English class. About 2/5th the way through the movie, the main character, John Klein, and this other man, now friendly with Klein, went to visit a doctor since Klein wanted the other guy, who had a strange vision, to get his head examined for tumors. Upon leaving the doctor’s office, they walk into a long dimly lit hallway with electric candles lining the sides of the hallway.

I exclaimed out loud: “That’s baker slash porter hall!”

A few people near me looked at me as if I was crazy.

“That’s Carnegie Mellon’s Baker Hall,” I said. “I was there for the whole summer and walked baker and porter hall a lot.”

Then people just turned away and kept watching the movie, but I was still excited. I was almost sure that scene was in baker hall. I would never forget that hallway. It’s just too distinctive and has that eeire feeling to it. I remember walking through porter into baker (they are linked) one day and thinking how it was movie material. The mood was just right there.

From that scene, if you walk down further a bit and turn left, the baker computer cluster will be there. That was where I did quite a few of my programming work for the Comp Sci core and also the Chime work for Biology.

Unfortunately, I can’t find a picture of the hallway online, but in any case, I wanted to share that with everyone. Seeing some place you’ve been in a movie is special.

Carnegie Mellon News confirms my hunch (posted on March 22, 2001):

“MOTHMAN PROPHECIES” TO BE FILMED HERE DURING SPRING BREAK

The Carnegie Mellon campus will become a movie set next week when “Mothman Prophecies,” starring Richard Gere, starts filming in Baker and Doherty halls during Spring Break. Production trailers and movie equipment will eliminate parking in the College of Fine Arts (CFA) lot on Sunday and Monday, March 25 and 26.

Very cool.

Voting

Those who know me can easily deduce who I am voting for (I’m finally old enough!). However, keeping to my corralary that this won’t become a political blog, I shall direct to a few links I found. First if you want a prediction of how the election will go Electoral Voteand Election Projection offers contrasting outcomes. The Votemaster of Electoral Vote was revealed yesterday to be the famous Dr. Andrew Tanenbaum. I suggest reading his statement on why he started Electoral Vote. His views are sensible and stikes a depressive tone about the current state of the US. But in any case, may the best candidate win and may he lead the US well in the next four years.
