Busy, Applying to Graduate Schools

2 #

Recently, I have been extremely busy with applying to graduate schools while juggling the usual coursework and research. I have a few projects lounging in the back of my mind that I’m itching to work on. Also, I’ve decided that I don’t like the microblogging format and will be reverting to a normal blog again. I’m thinking the format will have a “12 pieces” theme where I write something one substantial and interesting piece each month.

Looking back at typeset documents

0 #

I had to dig out an older LaTeX typeset document just moments earlier since I needed it for something else. And damn, LaTeX typeset documents always distract the hell out of me since it makes text look so beautiful. Instead of reading the content, I’m admiring every single letter, the glyphs in the italics, the smart rendering of foreign names (like Laegsgaard, the ae is stuck together by LaTeX). It makes the paper printed on look like it’s worth a lot. I’m like afraid to touch it. What power design has over me.

Slow working days

I’ve been trying to implement radial distribution function calculating in python these past two days. The biggest hurdle was trying to figure out exactly how to do it. I looked at two molecular/chemistry simulation books and they had small differences in logic with little explanation. I also looked at some other code I found in the research group (that I’m working in) and there are also small differences in logic! And it wasn’t helpful that they were all written in FORTRAN which is one of the most unreadable programming languages in use! I think I figured it all out now so I will be doing my own implementation…

Deleted link posts

I realized that the delicious link posts were just making my blog a sort of link spam site. So I took them all down. I also finally accepted the fact that I’m not a person who wants to constantly put details of my life online. Frankly, all the interesting things I could write are probably personal or would take a lot of time (which I don’t have) to write. Since I always have a really large TODO list, I’m more interested in getting things done on that list.

Dave Doing Homework

Steve: “Dave said he couldn’t come since he’s doing homework.”
Me: “Homework?! He never used to do homework?!?!”
Steve: “Yeah, I know! And wrap your mind around this: He’s doing homework in the summer.”
Me: “He’s been brainwashed. It’s no longer the Dave we know…”

End of Junior Year

Yeah, I failed at microblogging. That’s kind of sad. But anyway, I’m finishing up my finals week (I have to complete this essay and take one more final), and then heading back to Philly for a short break. Hopefully, I can finish the essay by the end of today…

Powerset Revolution

I guess I’ve been pretty bad at even microblogging. That’s kind of sad :). Well, a new “search engine” called Powerset released a wikipedia demo today, and it’s a mini-revolution in search. This company will change the way people search the web.

Non-stop Work

2 #

This week has been pretty exhausting already. For this term, it looks like Wednesday nights are my only “free time”. So far, I’ve been working almost non-stop from Monday to 6PM today on various assignments and this really tough Ch 21c set that took about two whole days to complete. Well, at least I can rest just a little bit until tomorrow.
